Finding Joy Through Support and Structure
“Phoebe is a young woman who joined LD Care with a history of complex behavioural challenges and limited engagement with the world around her.
During her transition, it became clear that Phoebe had rarely been out in the community. Her previous setting shared that she would only walk around within the residential compound, and any attempt to take her out would result in her lying down in public spaces, hitting her head on hard surface, or refusing to move. She displayed frequent distress behaviours such as pulling staff’s hair, biting her own hands, head-banging and dropping to the floor.
A New Beginning
“From the beginning, LD Care focused not on what Isabella couldn’t do, but on what she could. She was given a supportive structure that wasn’t overly restrictive but provided routine and predictability – something she responded to positively.
We introduced clear communication strategies tailored to her preferences. Initially, we used picture communication and visual aids, but gradually shifted to simple, clear verbal communication. Staff spoke slowly and gently, and we discovered that Isabella enjoyed this style of interaction. As a result, her verbal communication began to flourish – she started initiating conversations, engaging more socially, and even expressing affection.
A consistent routine, and advance warnings before transitions helped reduce anxiety. We also made sure Isabella had access to Safe Spaces – quiet, calming areas where she could retreat if she felt overwhelmed.
Poisitve reinforcement, including praise, rewards and preferred activities, played a crucial retreat if she felt overwhelmed.
Positive reinforcement, including praise, rewards, and preferred activities, played a crucial retreat if she felt overwhelmed.
Positive reinforcement, including praise, rewards and preferred activities, played a crucial role in reinforcing desired behaviours. Over time, Isabella settled in, became more cooperative, and showed remarkable emotional growth.
